There are a number of popular computer automated methods used for opening password protected files. Some of the methods are:
- Dictionary Attack - This attack uses words stored in a plain text dictionary file. A dictionary attack is much faster than a Brute-Force attack and is usually tried first.
- Brute Force Attack - This attack tries all possible characters combinations in a specified password length.
- Decryption - This attack tries all possible encryption keys. The end result is a decrypted file but no password is revealed.
